Documentation

I believe that I’m a fairly decent writer; I’ve always managed to ace my English classes in high school (and in college). I, however, do not see myself writing up documentation all my life. Yesterday I was assigned busywork yet again–this time it was documentation.

Documentation for an online video player. The only notable thing about the video player was its fluid usage of animations, but I feel like it’s pretty common nowadays.

At the end of the day, I send him my finished work, and he said that he’ll check it “soon”. Uh huh.

Even though it was simple work, I’m proud of it. I read over some documentation for a different video player a few weeks ago, and I can definitely say that my writing style surpassed this “professional” piece of documentation.

Oh, last note–I think this video player that I documented works a lot better than the one my workplace is trying to implement for their site. They’ll figure it out.

Journey’s Start

Hello viewers,

My name is Dana, and I’m a college student studying–I guess–in the budding field of Human-Computer Interaction. For me, in particular, I am an avid user-interface designer with an amazing skillset that impresses a lot of my classmates. I’ve worked with Photoshop for at least 8 years, Illustrator for about 4, and InDesign for less than 1. HTML and CSS is engraved in the back of my head (just look at my tattoo–just kidding) and I can whip up the HTML/CSS barebones of a website within a day’s work.

Sounds pretty impressive, right? Well then, how on earth did I apply for a web development internship and end up just debugging ActionScript for another intern’s project?

I would rather much be working on what the “Amazing Bill” intern is working on, which is the design and interface for a different project. Today, he needed some advice, and I was eavesdropping since I was bored out of my own mind from staring at the code. I wouldn’t let an opportunity pass me by, so I throw in my two cents. As much as my help was appreciated, though, the manager called me out for not doing my work.

… So what is this blog about? Finding ways to get what I want out of an internship, showing off some of my newly created work, and throwing out some cool tidbits about whatever I learn at my internship. Basically, this is a blog about me, Dana, striving for her dreams, which is to be a well-known user-interface design.
